Abstract
Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of Yoga exercise on decreasing the severity of constipation in psychiatric inpatients taking antipsychotics.

Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The data were collected from July 1 to Aug 31, 2005 at the B hospital in Busan City. 32 psychiatric inpatients were selected as the subjects by the non-probability convenient sampling. The patients were divided into two groups : an experimental group of 17 patients and a control group of 15 patients. Yoga exercise was given to the experimental group three times per wee (50 minutes every time) for two weeks and no program was given to the control group. The frequency of defecation and scores of constipation assessment scales were measured before and after the experiment. The data were analyzed using x©÷-test, t-test and Repeated measures ANOVA.

Result: Yoga exercise increased the frequency of defecation and reduced the scores of constipation assessment scales of the psychiatric inpatients.

Conclusion: Yoga exercise is an effective method for reducing the level of antipsychotics drug induced constipation in psychiatric inpatients. In addition, it is a non-invasive and non-pharmachologic method that can be applied by the nursing staffs.
